Ken Sim and ABC are attacking our democratic institutions, rolling back our climate protections, and making rents and homelessness skyrocket. We need to elect someone who will hold them accountable and fight for Vancouver.
In opposition at City Hall, Sean Orr will fight to expose Ken Sim and his billionaire backers. He'll fight for housing, he'll fight for integrity at city hall, and he'll fight for us.
Sean will work with anyone with a conscience, but he won't work with bullies. Ken Sim and ABC need to be held accountable. We know from history that whenever COPE is elected, other parties are better behaved. We've also been able to get big wins with just one seat. In 1968, COPE's Harry Rankin passed Vancouver's rent control bylaw with one seat. In the most recent term, COPE's Jean Swanson won free transit for kids under 12.
✓ Sean will block Ken Sim’s LNG lobby rollbacks. Ken Sim has already promised to bring the vote to restore polluting gas heating in new builds at the next opportunity. We need to elect Sean as part of a progressive opposition to make sure that he can’t find the votes to give a handout to big oil companies. Sean will expose the influence that Big Oil has on Ken Sim’s city hall.
✓ Sean will work with others to build a coalition that can reverse the ban on new supportive housing. ABC has fault lines which are clearer every day. On top of the ABC representatives he’s booted, there are more in his caucus who are not sure about his direction and shrinking popularity. Sean will work with other parties to open up those faults and reverse Sim’s cruel ban on badly needed supportive housing.
✓ Sean will work to bring back the Renters’ Office, but this time, with teeth. The renter’s office didn’t go far enough, but getting rid of it was a step backwards in a time where tenants are facing demovictions, rent hikes, and insecurity. And if Ken Sim blocks the return of the Renters’ Office, Sean Orr will make his office the renters’ office until we can Evict Ken Sim.
✓ Sean will always be a voice for what is needed, and call out Ken Sim and ABC for what they are doing to our city. Sean can move motions that will expose the ways that Ken Sim and ABC are misrepresenting their priorities, hiding their true intentions, and reveal the fault lines in ABC.
✓ Sean will update people in Vancouver every week with what’s happening at City Hall. As a columnist, Sean has been exposing the powerful for decades. In office, Sean will share what he’s learning and seeing at City Hall with a weekly reportback that will agitate, educate, and inspire people in Vancouver to take action to resist Ken Sim’s disastrous leadership.
✓ Sean will use his position to empower social movements to hold Ken Sim and ABC accountable, open up the doors of city hall to the people, and help to build a movement to make Ken Sim a one-term mayor. People in Vancouver are saying “enough is enough” to Ken Sim’s disastrous leadership. With someone like Sean on council, residents from neighbourhoods across Vancouver will again start to feel like their voice matters at City Hall.
✓ Sean will make Ken Sim and ABC actually show up to work. Ken Sim has missed a record amount of votes to jet-set around the world to Bitcoin conferences and other absurd wastes of time. With tight votes, and a strong voice of reason on council with Sean, ABC councillors will actually have to show up to vote if they want a chance to pass their agenda.
✓ Sean will fight for us and make Ken Sim and ABC’s last year in office as hard for them as possible, hold them accountable, expose their real intentions and agenda, and push them to rein in their billionaire-backed agenda. We know from history that whenever COPE is elected, other parties tend to find a conscience. Sean will push everyone to do what is right, and slow down Sim’s right-wing steamroll over our civic politics.
✓ Sean will fight for integrity, fight for housing, and fight for Vancouver. It won’t be easy, but even when it’s hard, we need to fight for people. Sean will be unwavering and principled. He will ruffle feathers. He will put his neck out. He will hold Ken Sim and ABC accountable and fight for us.
Biography
A message from Sean Orr:
Vancouver doesn’t have to be like this.
I love Vancouver, but I hate what it’s become.
The city is a playground for the 1%. Our social fabric is fraying from a housing system that prioritizes return on investment over human needs. People are sleeping on the streets every night and in every neighbourhood, tenants can't afford rent, and it’s getting worse.
We are at a pivotal time. We are in multiple overlapping crises; the housing crisis, climate change and the drug poisoning epidemic. The thread that connects all of these problems is the disproportionate political power of the rich.
People like Elon Musk are buying off politicians to shape the world in their own image and scrap services that people need. Billionaires are exploiting workers, driving up the costs of housing, and burning up our planet. They are scapegoating immigrants, trans kids, and drug users to hold onto power. For the billionaires, the system isn’t broken, it’s working as designed.
Our millionaire Mayor was installed by billionaire backers like Chip Wilson for a reason. Ken Sim is in power to serve the elite.
He killed the living wage policy, he killed the renters office, he killed social housing at Little Mountain, he killed the class action lawsuit to sue Big Oil for climate change, he tried to scrap the Integrity commissioner, he lied about the park board to get elected and then tried to scrap it, and he gave $3.8 million in empty homes tax earmarked for affordable housing to his wealthy developer friends.
Now is not the time for 'nice.' Now is the time to fight.
If I’m elected, I will spend every moment fighting Ken Sim and ABC and exposing them and their billionaire friends for what they are doing to our city.
We can fight for housing. We can fight to protect tenants from demovictions and exploitation. We can fight like hell to end homelessness. We can fight for fully funded and free public transit that connects everyone in Vancouver to amazing public services, parks, pools, and libraries in every corner of the city.
We’re the ones with the energy. We’re the ones with the principles. We’re the ones with the ‘swagger.’
Together we can take democracy back from the billionaires.
Together we can build the city we need.
Together we can Evict Ken Sim.
