Government budgets platforms

Here's what the 2025 Canadian election parties are promising.

Liberal

  • Balance the operating budget by 2028

"Balance the operating budget by Budget 2028, ensuring responsible fiscal management while making wise, long-term investments to build for Canada’s prosperity and future." — liberal.ca, retrieved 2025-04-23

  • Ensure government debt-to-GDP declines over the budget horizon
  • Maintain transfers to individuals ,like pensions, EI, and CCB payments
  • Maintain transfers to provinces and territories, like Equalization, Canadian Health Transfer, Canada Social Transfer, and Territorial Formula Financing
  • Maintain social programmes including $10-a-day childcare, dental care, and pharmacare

Conservative

  • Enact legislation requiring that for every new dollar spent by government, an equal amount must be reduced

"Pass a one-for-one spending law. For every new dollar spent, an equal amount must be reduced." — Change, retrieved 2025-04-23

Bloc

  • Lutter contre le pouvoir fédéral de dépenser
  • Mettre fin à la dépendance du fédéral aux sous-traitants

NDP

  • Reject cuts to the public sector and social programmes in order to balance the budget

"New Democrats are rejecting calls for cuts to the public sector and to social programs – cuts which would be made to reach a budgetary balance in the short-term, despite the costs and the consequences for people. Instead, we are proposing increased investments in both infrastructure and in people." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

  • Set aside an additional 10% of the budget each year as a contingency fund to hedge against risks like external shocks

"In the context of significant uncertainty, and in an abundance of caution, our fiscal plan will set aside an additional amount each year as a contingency fund. This will help hedge against risks, including further external shocks or events that could reduce government revenue and increase expenditures more than anticipated." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

  • Begin decreasing the debt-to-GDP ratio within four years

"The NDP’s fiscal target over a four-year mandate is a falling debt-GDP ratio by the fourth year at the latest. After accounting for the impact of revenue and expense measures on the economy via the fiscal multiplier, this is achieved even under the more dire scenario considered by the BoC." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

  • Strengthen the role of Commons standing committees in reviewing and approving government estimates

"We are also committed to bringing greater transparency and accountability to the federal budget-making process. This includes strengthening the role of House of Commons standing committees in reviewing and approving government estimates. Canadians deserve to know not just where their money is going—but whether it’s actually delivering results." — ndp.ca, retrieved 2025-04-19

We don't have any Green policies on Government budgets.
