Karen MacEwan

Independent for Saanich School Board

Public Safety & Policing

Police in Schools

I fully support the presence of Police Liason Officers in schools in Saanich.

Reconciliation & Indigenous Nations

Indigenous Schooling

It is a priority for me to focus on improving graduation rates for indigenous students. We should not stop until graduation rates are on par with non-indigenous peers.

Schools & Public Education

Artificial Intelligence in Schools

Like all new technologies, research is needed to determine best practices in the use of Artificial Intelligence in schools. A this time, I believe it should be limited to use by secondary students only.

Bullying & Bigotry

I believe that schools must be safe places for all students. Schools teach students to be tolerant, kind and to stand up against bullying and racism.

Indigenous Schooling

It is a priority for me to focus on improving graduation rates for indigenous students. We should not stop until graduation rates are on par with non-indigenous peers.

Neurodivergent Students & Support

I will ensure that there is sufficient funding to support students with diverse abilities in Saanich schools. All students should be able to succeed at school and graduate with dignity.

Police in Schools

I fully support the presence of Police Liason Officers in schools in Saanich.

Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
I have lived on the Saanich Peninsula for the past 35 years with my husband, Michael, and our 2 children. I have recently retired after 36 years as a teacher and principal in SD63. My ❤️ for public education and my educational leadership experience have led me to seek election.

I am grateful to have lived on the unceded territory of the WÁNEĆ people for the past 35 years with my husband, Michael who is a retired music teacher and the love of my life. Our two children, both of whom attended Saanich schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12, are now grown up and live with their partners nearby in Langford. I have recently retired after 36 years as a teacher and principal in the Saanich School District. I believe strongly in public education and will bring my years of experience as an educational leader to the board table should the voters of Saanich choose to elect me on Oct 17th.

If I am entrusted to serve this community, I will:

• Lead with integrity, compassion and a commitment to lifelong learning

• Respect different perspectives and listen with an open mind

• Honour my commitment to the Saanich community

• Remove barriers to learning to ensure success for all students

• Promote diversity, equity and inclusion across our schools

• Work collaboratively to make wise decisions and stand by them

Public education is the foundation of a healthy community. On October 17, I ask for your vote to serve as your School Board Trustee to continue building a strong future for all Saanich students.
